Society to Host Jeff Quick; Casey House Fundraising Continues
The Baxter County Historical Society meeting Tuesday, June 23rd, will feature a program by Jeff Quick, Chief Executive Officer, Food Bank of North Central Arkansas. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Library. Mr. Quick has led the Food Bank since 2011 and has guided them to their mission of "Building Bridges from Hunger to Hope" to create communities without hunger.
He is a prominent member of this community and currently serves as a member of the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance Board of Directors, Secretary of Feeding America's Southwest Region, Reppell Diabetes Advisory Board, Twin Lakes Community Foundation Board of Directors, the Mountain Home School District Wellness Committee, and several others. This should be an informative uplifting program and the public is encouraged to arrive a bit early for best seating.
The society's fundraiser "All Aboard at the Casey House" is nearing the halfway point of funds needed to complete scheduled restoration of the historic structure. Donations to sponsor one or more of the 100 needed white oak boards (at $150 each) to finish the back porch, can be mailed to the Baxter County Historical Society, P.O. Box 2125, Mountain Home, AR 72654. They can also be dropped off to the Museum at 300 Bomber Blvd. during normal business hours Tuesday and Thursday from 10-4. Donors will be recognized on the Society's website, in the Quarterly newsletter and recognition at the Casey House. Donors can be anonymous, if desired, and any amount of donation will be helpful.
The Museum has just begun to exhibit a vintage quilt, constructed in 1944 by Baxter County Home Demonstration Clubs. The public was asked to provide names of loved ones, family or friends serving in WWII to be placed on the quilt. For each name, folks were charged a dime. Proceeds were to buy war bonds. The response was overwhelming as more than 700 names are on the quilt. Many are recognizable as prominent in the development of Baxter County.
The quilt was awarded in May of 1945 to Clarice Allman. A short time ago the Society was contacted by a member of the Allman family who offered to loan the quilt for display to the public. The quilt is on a special rack, and the public is invited.
